How can you get a Romanian passport by investment?

1. Obtain a residence permit by investing in the country (minimum investment applies)

2. Apply for citizenship after 4 years of residency (reduced pathway from 8 to 4 years for applicants investing more than 1,000,000 euros in Romania)

Romanian Passport through Residency by Investment

It is possible to obtain a temporary residence permit when invest in a business in Romania or purchase real estate. The minimum investment required for real estate is typically around €100,000.

Once a temporary residence is obtained and after a certain amount of years, Romanian citizenship can be requested.

Generally speaking, to obtain Romanian citizenship by naturalization, the applicant has to have been lawfully living in the country for at least 8 years. Requirements include language proficiency, knowledge of Romanian history and culture, and proof of financial stability.

However, the 8 years period can be reduced to 4 years when investing in the country. Specifically, as per art. 8 of the Romanian Citizenship Law

  • the applicant is an internationally recognized personality;
  • the applicant is a citizen of a member state of the European Union;
  • the applicant has acquired refugee status according to the legal provisions in force;
  • the applicant has invested more than 1,000,000 euros in Romania.

Pathway to Citizenship

  1. Permanent Residence: After holding a temporary residence for five years, you may apply for permanent residency.
  2. Naturalization: After three years of permanent residency, you can apply for citizenship. Requirements include language proficiency, knowledge of Romanian history and culture, and proof of financial stability.
