Currently, Portugal does NOT offer a citizenship by investment programme
However, you can choose to make an investment through the Golden visa program, and apply for a passport after 5 years
Portugal Golden Visa leading to Citizenship by Investment
The Portugal Golden Visa program allows non-EU nationals to obtain residency in Portugal through various investment options. As for most of the Golden Visa Programmes in Europe, investors are required to invest a substantial amount into the Portuguese economy, throw one of the below options:
Option 1: Fund
A minimum investment of €500,000 in a qualifying Portuguese fund is required. Eligible funds include Private Equity and Venture Capital funds, but exclude any funds with direct or indirect ties to real estate.
Option 2: Company – Business
- Create at least 10 new full-time jobs in a Portuguese business owned by the main applicant.
- Establish a business in a low-density area in Portugal that creates a minimum of eight new full-time jobs, with ownership held by the main applicant.
- Invest a minimum of €500,000 in an existing Portuguese business, which must generate at least five new full-time jobs for a duration of three years
Option 3:
- Invest a minimum of €250,000 in the preservation of national heritage in Portugal.
- Invest at least €500,000 in research and development activities in Portugal.
Who can apply for a Portugal Passport by Investment?
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Have clean criminal records both in Portugal and your home country.
- Own the money you wish to invest from outside Portugal.
- Maintain the investment funds for at least five years.
Your family members that are eligible for a Portugal Golden visa are:
– Siblings who are under 26 years of age, depend on you financially and are in your custody
– Spouses.
-Children under the age of 18.
– Dependent children who are up to 26 years of age.
– Parents who are over 65 years of age and depend on you financially.
Other Pathways to obtain Portugal Passport
- Portuguese Citizenship by Birth: Individuals born to Portuguese parents, regardless of where they were born.
- Naturalization: Foreign nationals who have resided in Portugal for at least five years (with certain conditions, such as language proficiency and knowledge of Portuguese culture) can apply for citizenship.
- Citizenship by Marriage: Spouses of Portuguese citizens can apply for citizenship after three years of marriage, provided they can demonstrate a connection to the Portuguese community.
- Descent: Individuals with Portuguese ancestry may be eligible for citizenship, even if they were born outside of Portugal.
